COYOTE Calendar: November 5-November 11

This week we've got justice for witches, horny horses, a Scooby-Doo themed dinner, tempting holiday markets, and more.

Bold hand drawn words like "poetry" "sports" and "comics" surround a coyote reading a book, against a teal background.

Welcome to the COYOTE Calendar. Here are this week's handpicked events, just for you.

I hope you all found a place to enjoy the Valkyries winning the title for the gays. The parade is today, from 12-2pm along The Embarcadero, so if you're in the area go have some fun. We're entering holiday market season and I'm already overwhelmed and broke.

Glowfari (Oakland) and ZooLights (SF) both open this weekend, and I think we can all agree on which name is better. Coffee heads should get their palates ready for the San Francisco Coffee Festival "an immersive coffee experience." I hope that means there is a coffee dunk tank. This weekend you can also celebrate Leonard Cohen in SF, take a trip to Taiwan without the jetlag in San Mateo, see some exceptionally gorgeous arts and crafts in Marin, celebrate fall with glamping and music in Mendocino, and see an Italian family circus (not to be confused with the Mexican circus) in Redwood City.

This week we've also got justice for witches, horny horses, a Scooby-Doo themed dinner, tempting holiday markets, and more. We'll post new events each Wednesday. Go forth and enjoy!

  • The Body as Monument 〰️ Jess Sabogal's distinctive murals have appeared in Los Angeles, Paris, San Diego, San Jose, and, most recently, in SF at 2060 Folsom. At this talk she'll discuss what it's been like to carve out a space in the male-dominated mural world, and "explore lineage, radical representation, and the urgency of creating work for communities whose bodies and futures remain at risk for erasure." 〰️ 11:30am–1pm 〰️ Stanford University 〰️ FREE 〰️ more info
  • History of Tea - Tap Twice Tea 〰️ With fall comes cozy tea season, so prepare yourself with this cute little event that covers the history of tea and all the different varieties. How is tea even made? What's the best way to brew it? What should you be tasting for? Participants will get to sample five different tea types. 〰️ 12-1:30pm 〰️ Marin County Civic Center, San Rafael 〰️ FREE 〰️ more info
  • Fiber Arts 〰️ Slide Ranch is a real hidden gem, and this is a fun way to spend a day outside in a beautiful place learning something cool: how to work raw wool into yarn. You'll meet the sheep, pick, clean, card, felt, spin, and then work on a collaborative weaving or felting project with the groups. Plus, mocktails featuring herbs from the garden. 〰️ 5:30-7:30pm 〰️ Slide Ranch, Muir Beach 〰️ $65, registration closes today at 3pm so sign up now if you want to do this one 〰️ more info
  • Reclaiming the Witch 〰️ Witches are everywhere in popular media, from Kiki's Delivery Service, to Agatha All Along, to, sigh, Harry Potter (please find another book to read). Along the way most of us have lost sight of the historical power dynamics built into witches, and at this workshop author Maya Gawonii Shabazz-Saleh encourages attendees to see the witch as "a historical tool of gendered and racialized control, and its reclamation as a framework for intuition, boundary-setting, and resistance." If you see people dressed in pointy black hats and think "my culture is not your costume," this is for you. Someone please curse JK Rowling while you're at it. 〰️ 5pm 〰️ UC Berkeley 〰️ FREE 〰️ more info
  • Dead and Life Celebrations in P’urhépecha Communities 〰️ Writer, poet, historian, Indigenous interpreter, and actor Rubí Tsanda Huerta is giving this lecture to cap off three days of events and conversations. This lecture focuses on her community of P’urhépecha in Chilchota, Michoacán and their traditions around the altars, death, life, and celebration. 〰️ 5-6:30pm 〰️ Native American Cultural Center, Stanford 〰️ FREE 〰️ more info
  • From Street to Stage with Beaver Bauer 〰️ Debra "Beaver" Bauer has spent over five decades in San Francisco (after hitchhiking here from New York City!), and much of her time has been spent bringing characters to life through costume design. Now the designer and artist is getting a retrospective show that features sketches, photography, video clips, and of course costumes from her wide-ranging archive of joyous and strange pieces of wearable art. If you can't make this opening reception, check out the show before it closes in April, 2027. 〰️ 5-7:30pm 〰️ SFPL Koret Auditorium 〰️ FREE 〰️ more info
  • Safer Together's 6th Birthday Bash 〰️ Safer Together is one of those orgs that is just quietly, consistently, doing the hard work on the ground to help people every single day. And they've been doing it for six years now, which is a huge accomplishment for a small org doing real harm reduction with limited resources. Celebrate six years of that work with them, and help them stay afloat as new challenges come their way. Even if you can't attend this event, you can donate here. "The evening promises to enchant and inspire, with moving testimony, delicious food, and opportunities to go home with more precious goods than when you came in." 〰️ 6-9pm 〰️ Far East Cafe, SF 〰️ $50+ 〰️ more info
  • Josie Iselin: Art & Algae 〰️ Seaweed is one of the coolest and most important forms of life in California, and most people never really think about it. At this talk, artist, author and designer Joseie Iselin will tell you what you should know about kelp and marine algae, and how she became obsessed with seaweed and started slapping it onto a flatbed scanner. 〰️ 6-7pm 〰️ Steve Silver Music Center, SF 〰️ FREE 〰️ more info
  • Women Behind the Camera During the Silent Era w/ Dwight Cleveland 〰️ This one is for my Antiques Roadshow sickos. You know the poster guy? Well this is like that, but with a different guy. I'm doing a great job with this description! Please be nice to me, the time change has melted by brain. Dwight Cleveland is a poster expert and is going to take you through his huge collection of images with a specific lens (see what I did there) for women behind the camera. 〰️ 7:30pm 〰️ The 418 Project, Santa Cruz 〰️ $12.51 〰️ more info
  • Squirrel Flower at The Chapel 〰️ As soon as I listened to the latest Squirrel Flower album I texted fellow COYOTE Rahawa Haile about it. If you're a Yapper or Howler, you heard Rahawa's take on the album in a recent newsletter. I love it because it manages to be both ghostly and specific — a kind of songwriting that I associate with people like Lucy Dacus and Adrianne Lenker and that is so, so hard to pull off. I usually don't put a lot of out-of-town bands on this calendar (the goal is to highlight Bay Area creatives), but this one I'm making an exception for. See you there! 〰️ 7pm 〰️ 〰️ The Chapel 〰️ San Francisco 〰️ $27.22 〰️ more info
  • Lisa Hanawalt: "I Can't Stop Thinking About Horses and Sex" with Julia Wertz 〰️ Nobody does it like Lisa Hanawalt does it. She's horny, she's funny, she's sad, she's tender, she's so, so insightful about the experience of being a person in the world while also being, again, genuinely hilarious. Tuca & Bertie deserved so many more seasons. I still own a shirt she drew that has cacti shaped like genitals all over it. Her latest book is a graphic memoir about breakups, anxiety, love, loss, and desire. And horses, obviously. 〰️ 7pm 〰️ Pegasus Books, Berkeley 〰️ FREE 〰️ more info
  • DJ Workshop 〰️ Learn the ABC's of OOTNZ OONTZ at this DJ workshop that will get you started with spinning, mixing, and dropping that beat. Next thing you know, your broke friend is going to ask you to DJ their wedding and you'll be fending off the drunk aunt who wants to hear “Pony” again. 〰️ 7-9pm 〰️ Golden Records, Berkeley 〰️ FREE 〰️ more info
  • Fuera ICE 〰️ Now and forever we say: Fuck ICE. (And if you have time and capacity, take a little trip down to the Residence Inn Pleasanton where ICE is staying and make their lives UNpleasanton.) This event features DJs, a market, live photos, live printing (bring a blank shirt), and the knowledge that you are on the right side of history. 〰️ 8pm-12am 〰️ El Rio, SF 〰️ FREE 〰️ more info
  • School Of Drag Presents: Silicone Valley 〰️ Forget the intersection of art and technology, we're making a left turn and going to the intersection of gender and technology at this tech-themed drag show. Bring your dollar bills, and your puns, and your willingness to entertain a lot of jokes about RAM. Distributed denial-of-service as kink — is this anything? That's enough from me. I'll leave it to the pros. 〰️ 9-10pm 〰️ The Stud, SF 〰️ FREE 〰️ more info

  • Mushroom & Herb Walk 〰️ Fall means that mushroom walks are back, baby! And Cindy, who hosts some great nature walks, is also back in action in the Bay Area. Join her as she leads a small group through Berkeley to learn about common mushroom and herb species growing locally right now, how to identify them, what they can be used for, and how to responsibly harvest and use nature's bounty. • Delphian Lectures: Meet the Instruments & Meet the Dynasties 〰️ This lecture series is such a fun idea — each one features the opportunity to "meet" a new instrument, and learn about the history and engineering of the instrument, and the composers who wrote music for it. So far they've done piano and strings. This one offers you the opportunity to meet the guitar. If you can't make this one, future sessions include intros to brass, woodwinds, conductors, "unusual instruments" and more. 〰️ 11am-12pm 〰️ San Jose Public Library, Willow Glen 〰️ FREE 〰️ more info
  • Steven Universe in Concert at Grace Cathedral 〰️ Steven Universe got me through a very dark place, and I will be forever grateful for the show and it's strange, beautiful kindness. Now, for the first time ever, some of the composers behind the show's music will be collaborating with the local Sixth Station Trio to perform the beloved tunes from the series. If you've ever seen the show, you know that music is a huge piece of its heart. Warning: Your fingers might turn into cats. 〰️ 7pm 〰️ Grace Cathedral, SF 〰️ $35+ 〰️ more info
  • “The Smallest Unit of Liberation”: Kuleana, Community, & Movement Building 〰️ If voting leaves you cold (fair enough), this two-part workshop might offer something more sustaining and, ultimately, directly impactful. Join Dr. Jamaica Heolimeleikalani Osorio in a generative and creative exploration of the concept of kuleana — "our responsibilities to one another, our communities, and the lands that sustain us." If individual relationships are the smallest units of liberation, how can we help ourselves and one another be free? What can we learn from successful campaigns rooted in solidarity, relationship, and direct collective work. 〰️ 5-8pm 〰️ UC Berkeley 〰️ FREE but registration required, and there are only a few spots left as of this posting so sign up now if you want to go!〰️ more info
  • Ladies of Freestyle 〰️ A good old fashioned party with sick beats here celebrating the ladies of Freestyle (this kind, not this kind). I have no idea what they're going to play (aside from Angelina, obviously) but here's my list: Nayobe, Lisa Lisa, The Cover Girls, Cynthia, Judy Torres, and Corina. Vibe on, break your heart, repair it, and dream of good mofongo. 〰️ 5-9pm 〰️ El Rio, SF 〰️ FREE 〰️ more info
  • Wet + Sticky Fundraiser 〰️ For two years, the folks at wet + sticky have provided the Bay Area with free printing of flyers, informational materials, handouts, and more. Help them raise money for a new printer to keep that work going! There will be a DJ, a chance to smash old printers, and the opportunity to be slapped in the face by someone hot. 〰️ 8pm-close 〰️ Tamarack, Oakland 〰️ $5-100 suggested donation (cash if you can) 〰️ more info

  • Hands-On Seed Processing with Farmer Sama 〰️ Is there anything more magical than a seed? You can really understand why so many myths, legends, and religions feature seed-based tales and allegories. The seed is womb, is future, is history, is sustenance, is vulnerability. Join Farmer Sama, who runs a small-scale farm focused on growing and sharing seeds for heritage crops from Southwest Asia and North Africa. We're at the end of growing season now, which means its time to harvest, clean, and prepare the seeds for storage. Learn how that all works, and experience the magic and meditation of the process. 〰️ 10:30am-12pm 〰️ Local Economy, Oakland 〰️ $10 〰️ more info
  • Diwali & Día de los Muertos in the Parks - Planting as Remembrance 〰️ There are many ways to remember those we've lost, and one way is to plant something that will live on in their memory. Join volunteers at the native tidal marsh in the Presidio to help plant native plants and speak love into the future through the Earth. 〰️ 10:30am-12:30pm 〰️ Presidio Tunnel Tops, SF 〰️ FREE 〰️ more info
  • Mákkin Mak Wárep: Muwekma Ohlone Tapestries, In Conversation 〰️ Artist Kalie Granier and descendants of the Muwekma Ohlone came together to create two gorgeous tapestries using pigments made from lichens harvested on the Djerassi lands. • SAVOUR SUPPER CLUB * SCOOBY-DOO 〰️ I'm obsessed with this event and think more things like this should happen! • The Bomb in/and/out of the Archive. feat. Zoé Samudzi 〰️ I immediately texted the link to this one to a couple of friends being like "see you there?" and the answer was universally "oh hell yes." Zoé Samudzi is a genius, and this talk comes out of her time at La Becque in Switzerland where she developed a project called "Can the African Steal?" Using a wide variety of visual images, she traces uranium extraction as it moves from and between King Leopold, Kantagese mines in Belgian Congo, Los Alamos, the Marshall Islands, and Japan. 〰️ 〰️ 5-6:30pm 〰️ UC Berkeley 〰️ FREE 〰️ more info
  • Africa's Disappearing Rainforest: Findings from the Field 〰️ Biologist Ravinder Sehgal has spent two decades doing fieldwork in Cameroon where he tracks birds and mosquitos as they move from intact forests (good) to nearly cleared land and palm oil plantations (bad). At this talk, Sehgal will tell stories from the field and take you inside his research. 〰️ 6:30-8:30pm 〰️ Nob Hill, SF 〰️ $49.87 〰️ more info

What do you mean you're a device that only works in the rain and only plays The Weather Girls? 〰️ 6:30-9pm 〰️ tiat, SF 〰️ $10 〰️ more info
  • ZYZZYVA Issue 133 Celebration 〰️ Full disclosure: I'm a bit biased on this one because I have a short story in this issue of Zyzzyva. But even if I didn't, I'd probably put this event on the calendar! Come celebrate the 133rd issue of California's iconic literary magazine with the name I was too embarrassed to ask how to pronounce for several years (it's ziz-ih-vuh, you're welcome) with magazine editor Oscar Villalon and guests Allie Coon and Cristina Fries. Plus, this issue is covered in coyotes drawn by COYOTE's fav Helen Shewolfe Tseng. 〰️ 7pm 〰️ City Lights, SF 〰️ FREE 〰️ more info

  • Neighborhood Resilience Workshop 〰️ It's never too late to create or update your community's connections and emergency preparedness plans, whether to deal with an ICE surge, floods, earthquakes, fires, or, hell, when aliens finally arrive on Earth. This is at the Santa Cruz Public Library, so you know at least one person in attendance will be there for that last thing. And you know what, why not? The things that prepare you for aliens will also probably be useful during a flash flood. 〰️ 5-7pm 〰️ Santa Cruz Public Library, Branciforte Branch 〰️ FREE 〰️ more info
  • Housing Advocacy 101: Understanding Policy and Making Your Voice Heard 〰️ I can pretty much guarantee that you've got opinions about housing. You live in the Bay Area after all, which means every single day you come face-to-face with the results of failed housing policy (for yourself, others, or both). But how do you actually do something about it? At this session, experts will take you under the hood to better understand how how local policy decisions are made, and how to advocate for the changes you want to see. This is a great way to go from "yeah I have THOUGHTS!" to actually being able to do something with them. 〰️ 5:30-7:00pm 〰️ Local Economy, Oakland 〰️ FREE 〰️ more info
  • Do I Want Kids? A Psychology-Based Guide to Figuring It Out 〰️ How the hell do you figure out if you want kids? This is a conundrum that I and many people I know are constantly grappling with — between the climate change impact of kids, the lack of a robust social safety net, the increase in maternal deaths in the US, and the good, old-fashioned fear that you're going to absolutely fuck your kids up. This is one of those decisions were there really aren't take-backsies. At this talk, Stanford researcher Meghan Brown offers one way to try to navigate this question, using something called "Bronfenbrenner's ecological systems model." Don't worry, I also had to Google that. This explanation includes a handy color-coded diagram. 〰️ 7-9pm 〰️ Hawthorn SF 〰️ $27 〰️ more info

I've got my eye on a couple of other events this center is putting on, too. 〰️ 4:30pm Stanford University 〰️ FREE 〰️ more info
  • Junk journaling to Nosferatu 〰️ Let the dulcet tones of Hugh Doolan guide you at this weekly community gathering to junk journal (a form of journaling that involves using whatever scraps you have around to create) while an old film flickers around you. This week it’s Nosferatu (1922). Bring your yarn, clippings, paper, glue, or nothing at all — they’ll have supplies on hand too. 〰️ 6-8pm 〰️ Spire, Oakland 〰️ FREE 〰️ more info
