Yap Zone: The Songs Getting Us Through... Whatever This Is
A playlist for fall, or whatever.
The past couple of weeks have been that strange, wonderful time in the Bay Area when we know that it’s fall, but it’s still deliciously warm outside. Personally, it’s my favorite time of the year where we can shamelessly be in denial that summer is over. Case in point: I spent all of last weekend floating and jumping into the Russian River in Guerneville with my friends (it was glorious!).
In that spirit, I asked the team to share the songs they loved listening to this summer, and plan to keep playing as we settle into the fall season. Maybe this playlist can help you hold onto summer just a little longer? And who knows … even serve as the soundtrack that gets you through the midterm elections? (Yeah I know, who am I kidding?)
Happy listening!
Syd - “Any Time (feat. James Fauntleroy)”
It’s been a while since I’ve wanted to play an entire album on loop, but Syd’s latest, Beard, has been in my rotation ever since it dropped in July. It quickly became the soundtrack to my summer but the song I kept returning to the most was ‘Any Time,' this tender, intimate track about surrendering to an intoxicating love. The lyrics are simple, but devastating, like: “Every time you come over, I come too” (ooh wee!) — Cecilia Lei
Squirrel Flower - “Helicopters"
COYOTE’s resident Calendar guy Reo sent me Squirrel Flower’s latest album knowing how utterly helpless I am against a woman singing sad songs through a cloud of fuzzy guitars, especially when said songs could qualify as country if one un-stomped their overdrive pedals. “Helicopters” might as well be a Lucinda Williams track that stumbled into the wrong bar. One where there’s “Something About What Happens When We [Slowcore].” Naturally, I’m here for it. That bar is my home and has been for years. — Rahawa Haile
