COYOTE Calendar: October 15-October 21

This week we've got salty lakes, vampiric debates, speculative sculpture, and more.

Bold hand drawn words like "poetry" "sports" and "comics" surround a coyote reading a book, against a teal background.

Welcome to the COYOTE Calendar. Here are this week's handpicked events, just for you.

It's the 60th anniversary of the Black Panther Party, and there are events throughout Oakland honoring that important and ongoing movement. All power to the people. The Filipino American International Book Festival is happening all weekend in SF. The Witching Hour pole show is on this weekend in Rohnert Park. The Hitchcock Film Fest is in Bodega Bay.

Some additional date ideas from me, your local extremely cool and normal calendar guy: Go see some holy blood at the Archdiocese of San Francisco, try to find some horny tarantulas, get high and listen to Bay Area native Remi Wolf's new album, and wander through the San Francisco Fall Show to stare agog at the fancy gold antiques.

Bay Area Current is close to their subscriber goals, so go check them out if you want "working-class life and culture from the left." Subscribing gets you one of the best bumper stickers in the state.

A few small housekeeping notes for those of you who like to peer behind the calendar curtain: I've decided to revert the organization of this calendar back to our previous format. Each day's events are now once again listed in chronological order, rather than trying to group them by location and then list by time. If any of you have strong feelings about that, send me an email. You also might notice in this calendar a new symbol next to certain events (☼). That indicates that the event is put on by someone who has at some point purchased a sponsorship or ad space at COYOTE. We do not currently offer ad space on this calendar or special placement in return for dollars. I am also not involved in any way in ad sales here, and buying an ad elsewhere at COYOTE has no bearing on whether I list or don't list an event. But we also believe in transparency.

This week we've also got salty lakes, vampiric debates, speculative sculpture, and more. We'll post new events each Wednesday. Go forth and enjoy!

  • Lunchtime Curator Talk | Solid Pictures 〰️ Have you ever heard of "photosculpture?" I had not, but apparently in 1959 a French artist and inventor named François Willème developed a technique by which he turned photographic negatives into solid figures. Now, you can see these rare artifacts on display, and at this talk Patrick R. Crowley, Assistant Curator of European Art, will explain how "these experiments laid the groundwork for the scanning, machining, and printing technologies ubiquitous today." Even if you can't make the talk, this exhibit is worth a trip to the farm. 〰️ 12-1pm 〰️ Stanford University Cantor Arts Center 〰️ FREE 〰️ more info
  • Ordinary Horror: The Aesthetics of Deformation from Leopardi to Ferrante - with Andrea Capra 〰️ Want to start a debate that will never end at a literary party? Simply ask a mid-sized group "what is horror?" and walk away. Sure, horror is serial killers and ghosts and demons and vampires. But perhaps the most terrifying elements of horror (even, I would argue, in those stories) is everyday human cruelty. In his new book Ordinary Horror: The Aesthetics of Deformation from Leopardi to Ferrante Dr. Adrea Capra argues that horror can be found in everything from Primo Levi's writings on Auschwitz and Elena Ferrante's descriptions of sexual violence. 〰️ 12pm 〰️ Stanford University 〰️ FREE 〰️ more info
  • The neural basis of cuttlefish camouflage and social behavior 〰️ I think we all probably have nature videos that immediately burned themselves into our cells. For me, one of them is the first time I saw footage of a cuttlefish changing colors to hypnotize its prey. I'll wait while you go watch that, if you haven't seen it. Okay, you're back? Great! Now you can learn about how the hell they do that???? Tessa Montague from Columbia University will talk about work that tries to figure out how a cuttlefish translates what it's seeing to what its skin is doing. 〰️ 12:30-1:30pm 〰️ UC Berkeley 〰️ FREE 〰️ more info
  • Black Panther Party 60th Anniversary: Honoring the Rank & File 〰️ Hear from Black Panther Party alumni first hand at this event celebrating the names you don't learn about in school — the folks who ran the offices, packed the lunches, and showed up to fight against racism and police abuse. Hear from those folks directly about their experiences, and memories, and what they see moving forward for Oakland and the movement. 〰️ 5-7pm 〰️ Oakland History Center 〰️ FREE 〰️ more info
  • Edward Said: The Politics of an Oppositional Intellectual 〰️ Edward Said's work has never been more relevant, as Israel continues to carry out a genocide in Gaza whose roots stretch far beyond October 7th, 2023. Much has been said about Said's writing, but in this talk by Nubar Hovsepian, a close friend and confidant of Said's, you'll get a sense of how the man himself came to his ideas of resistance and liberation despite continued, often violent repression and resistance. 〰️ 5pm 〰️ UC Berkeley 〰️ FREE 〰️ more info
  • The Art of Midlife #4: On the Possibilities of Women's Sports, with Kate Schatz and Audacious Wilson 〰️ "How do we build community in midlife? What does it mean to be a sports fan in a middle-aged body? Why are so many women-of-a-certain age getting Valkyries tattoos?" All these questions and more with two women who know both women and ball. Celebrate the Valkyries historic WNBA Playoffs run, and learn how women's sports can be a place to connect, celebrate, and feel like part of something even if you're not normally a sports fan. 〰️ 6-8pm 〰️ Local Economy, Oakland 〰️ $10 suggested donation 〰️ more info
  • Fungi of Western Australia & Queensland 〰️ If you've gotten bored of the local fungi here in the Bay Area, come to this talk to hear Damon Tighe discuss the fungus down under. Much like the rest of Australia and Queensland, the fungi down there are unique and surprising. "Logistics, time of year, and what animals not to pet will all be covered." 〰️ 6pm 〰️ 〰️ Sebastopol Grange 〰️ FREE 〰️ more info
  • Plant Bingo 〰️ Buy a drink (non-alcoholic options available) and get a bingo card and be on your way to potential plant prizes. Hosted by drag queen King-Bobby, this is a fun way to get a little greenery in your life and meet a new fun villain (self-described). 〰️ 7-9pm 〰️ Propagation, SF 〰️ cost of a drink 〰️ more info
A cartoon coyote next to purple words that say Friday, October 16, 2026

Editor's note: what's up with the dearth of events on Fridays? Saturdays are packed to the gills, and Fridays are always so slim. Are Fridays over? Did I miss the memo?

  • Weird Halloween Costume Workshop with Cole Zlata 〰️ Don't let the costume making sneak up on you! Get started early, and make something weird and wonderful. Artist Cole Zlata leads this workshop and is on hand to help you go big, go strange, go conceptual, go cerebral, go wild. "Giant heads. Impractical objects. Creatures. Food. Weather Systems. Questionable ideas. Let's get weird." This is a two-part workshop, so only sign up if you can also attend the second session on Oct 23rd! Please share what you make with me. 〰️ 10am-2pm 〰️ Point Reyes Library 〰️ FREE but you have to call and register 〰️ more info
  • Inside Your San Francisco Election Ballot 〰️ I know I'm a broken record on these election events, but it really does pay to do even a little bit of research on your local elections before you're faced with empty bubbles and a deadline. Especially in California, where we are blessed/cursed by the proposition system. Hear experts from CalMatters, KALW, and San Francisco Public Press break down the local races and ballot measures and answer your questions. 〰️ 5pm 〰️ SFPL Main Branch 〰️ San Francisco 〰️ FREE 〰️ more info
  • Literary Salon: Spooky Storytelling 〰️ Put a costume on and rock up to this reading that goes all in on the Halloween spirit. Readers Rowena Singer, Beth Winegarner, Sezin Devi Koehler, and Lauren C. Johnson will all weave tales of mystery, darkness, and delight. Snacks and drinks provided! 〰️ 5:30-7:30pm 〰️ The Writer's Grotto, SF 〰️ FREE (donations welcome) 〰️ more info
  • FORESTSPEAK 〰️ As soon as I read the phrase "speculative sculpture" I mashed that "put it in the calendar" button so hard. This is the solo show that culminates Kelsey Chen's residency at Now Place and it features a glorious and exciting merger of text, ceramic, ink, and found and foraged materials to ask "what a humanism that is ecological and planetary in consciousness could look like." Really juicy stuff. 〰️ 7-9pm 〰️ Now Place, SF 〰️ FREE 〰️ more info

  • BARS Century Ride 〰️ If you've ever wanted to ride 100 miles on your bike with some cool homies, this is a great opportunity to do so. The Bay Area Rock Skippers ("essentially an excuse to hang out and skip rocks in an organized setting") is putting on this century ride going from SF, down to San Jose, and then up back to Richmond. It's a pretty easy, flat route, but it's still 100 miles so be for real about whether that's something you want to do. That said, the route follows the BART and Cal Train routes so if you need to bail, you can get yourself home. Bring water and lunch and have fun! 〰️ 7am meetup, 7:30am roll out 〰️ San Francisco 〰️ FREE 〰️ more info
  • Coastal prairie fire ecology walk 〰️ By now you're probably aware of the idea of "good fire" and prescribed burns, but how do they actually work in practice? On this walk you'll learn about the habitat along the Bourne Ridge, once a coastal prairie that has now turned to dense trees and shrubs, and how some stewards of this land are using fire to try and keep the landscape healthy and awaken the seedbank of coastal prairie native plants. This is a short but strenuous one mile hike, so wear good shoes, and bring water and layers. 〰️ 9am-1pm 〰️ Martin Griffin Preserve, Stinson Beach 〰️ FREE but RSVP 〰️ more info
  • Black Bathers Day 〰️ Sometimes simple is the best: Black bathers come through and enjoy the sauna, an ocean dip, waterside hangouts, and more. These sell out immediately every time, so get there early if you want to be sure to get the goods. 〰️ 11am-4pm 〰️ Clarion Alley Mural Project, SF 〰️ FREE 〰️ more info
  • Bay Area Science Festival 〰️ Bring your bestie and your favorite kids to this fun day-long science fest. Over 125 demonstrations, hands-on games, lab tours, magic shows, talks, and more! I would bet ten million dollars I do not have that there will be bubbles. 〰️ 11am-4pm 〰️ UCSF Koret Quad 〰️ FREE 〰️ more info
  • International Vampire Film Festival 〰️ Remember when Soleil accidentally nearly caused an international incident with their "Dadliest Band" bracket? I think you could probably incite just as much intense debate with a "Most Vampiric" movie bracket. Sure you would have to include the classics, Dracula, Nosferatu, A Girl Walks Home Alone at Night, Twilight, Sinners. But are the vampires in Only Lovers Left Alive even really vampiric? They mostly just mope around? If the word "vampire" is never uttered the entire film (as in Cronos) does it even count? That sound you hear is me fleeing from the wrath of COYOTE's actual movie critics. Anyway, come watch some iconic vampire films at this film festival, and sharpen your vampire movie opinion fangs. 〰️ 11:30am-midnight 〰️ Balboa Theatre, SF 〰️ $30 for a full day pass 〰️ more info
  • Inner Outer Zine Release Party Pt. 2 〰️ I had never in my life heard of a sandwich potluck (in which you are encouraged to bring sandwich ingredients, not completed sandwiches), but it's such a fun idea! Bring your sliced whatevers and assemble a sandwich in celebration of Inner Outer's second issue. The zine is all about SF's parks (beautiful), and you'll also be invited to make a sandwich-inspired zine (amazing). 〰️ 12-3pm 〰️ The Panhandle, SF 〰️ $0-20 〰️ more info
  • Clement St. Art Fair & Broke-Ass Stuart Day 〰️ As a calendar editor I simply could not leave off this day of celebration for one of the hardest working event listers in the business: Stuart Schuffman, who is probably less broke than he was when he started Broke-Ass Stuart but, let's be real, the journalism world is a wreck, so he's probably still a little broke. This year he's combining his celebration with the 3rd annual Clement Street Art Fair, so you're guaranteed all sort of good times including activities, art, crafts workshops, live printing, a bike fix-it station, and more. 〰️ 12-5pm 〰️ Clement Street, SF 〰️ FREE 〰️ more info
  • Topographical Map Reading 101 with Outré 〰️ Have you ever looked at a map and been like "what the hell are all those squiggly lines?" Welcome to the wonderful world of topography, my friends! • Joe Bataan at the Yerba Buena Gardens Festival ☼ 〰️Latin music icon Joe Bataan is still wowing audiences after sixty years with his talent and charisma. This man has the aura, as the kids say. From doo-wop, to soul, to salsa, to disco and hip-hop, Bataan has built an incredible career full of bops and he’s not slowing down. COYOTE will be tabling at this event too, so come say hi. 〰️2-4:30pm 〰️Yerba Buena Gardens, SF 〰️FREE 〰️more info
  • Real Time & Space Open Studios 〰️ I'm a huge lover of open studios, and this one is a must-see in my opinion. The folks at Real Time & Space (which include Cara Esten Hurtle, whose recent project surveilling the surveillance state you can read about here) are the real deal. They've just moved to a new studio, and now you can come through and see what they're up to. Definitely check it out. 〰️ 3-5pm 〰️ Real Time & Space Studio, Oakland 〰️ FREE 〰️ more info
  • Twilight Nature Walk at the Baylands 〰️ Twilight isn't just a movie where you can see Kristen Stewart have no chemistry with Robert Pattinson; it's also the best time to see bats, birds, and other spooky critters! Take a walk with a friendly and knowledgeable docent at this meander through the Baylands, and learn about the many plants and animals that call the region home. Wear warm layers, and bring a pair of binoculars if you've got them. 〰️ 5-6:30pm 〰️ EcoCenter, Palo Alto 〰️ FREE but limited space, registration required 〰️ more info

  • Chinaka Hodge's All Greg's Kids Come Home, a staged reading 〰️ This is described in the blurb as "Wes Anderson meets hella Oakland," and reading that I suspect you will know if this is for you or not. Chinaka Hodge is a real deal Oaklandite, and at this reading you'll hear from her latest piece, in which "the oldest daughter in a family of top performing neuro-divergents decides to unmask at a high stakes homecoming." 〰️ 7pm 〰️ The Studio, Stanford 〰️ $43+ 〰️ more info
  • An Evening Spell: Trans Poetry & Hardware Hang ☼ 〰️ Listen, I'm sorry to be doing the world's most chaotic LitQuake suggestions by just randomly sprinkling them into the calendar instead of doing a true roundup post. But I'm just one person and there are SO MANY events. So you're going to have to live with me just pulling out all the trans ones and featuring those. If you want something else, go look at the full schedule. At this one, you'll hear experimental music, poetry readings, and more. If you were intrigued by Rahawa's review of golden lionheart collier’s ‘Hidden Currents’, this is for you. 〰️ 7-9pm 〰️ The Crown, Oakland 〰️ FREE, $10-15 suggested donation 〰️ more info

At this one, four bands who will bring the house down. 〰️ 8pm-midnight 〰️ Purple House, SF 〰️ technically free but it's a fundraiser so bring money 〰️ more info
A cartoon coyote next to purple words that say Sunday, October 18, 2026
  • Contour Drawing + Wire Sculpture 〰️ There are only four spots left in this one so get your ticket now if you want to attend. Learn how to make contour wire sculptures, play with space, create shapes, and more with Oakland-based artist Duncan Sherwood-Forbes. This is a great technique to learn to be able to create one-of-a-kind gifts for friends (trust me). Or make your own wall hanging or freestanding sculpture. The world is your wire oyster. 〰️ 1-4pm 〰️ The BEAM 〰️ Oakland 〰️ $135 〰️ more info
  • Queers of the Plaza Rally 〰️ Join Queers Undermining Israeli Terrorism (QUIT) and Gay Shame at this rally demanding that SF politicians stand up for what is right across several connected fronts: trans liberation, Palestinian justice, and the fight for a better world rather than a worse one (is that so much to ask?). 〰️ 1:30-2:30pm 〰️ Harvey Milk Plaza, SF 〰️ more info
  • Berkeley Bird Fest 〰️ Bird freaks, your time has come! This annual festival of bird nerds is always a lovely time, whether you're meeting up with fellow birders to do some peeping, or taking a tour of a museum, or gathering to talk about the time(s) a bird has changed your life. There will also be bird origami, bird soundscapes, bird tributes, bird writing, bird performances, and more. To cap it all off, Lauren Markham and Ed Yong will answer chill, lowkey questions like "What does it mean to bear witness to a world of immense wonder AND a world in the midst of climate crisis?" and "What does it mean to lose ourselves in nature AND reckon with the loss of the natural world in the past, present, and future?" 〰️ 8am 〰️ 5pm 〰️ Birding around Berkeley, also at the David Brower Center 〰️ Berkeley 〰️ FREE 〰️ more info
  • Bran Mello and the Afterglow, New Earth Farmers, Eggcorn 〰️ I've said it before but one of the fun parts of curating this calendar is discovering new (to me) music. (Check out the songs that have been getting COYOTE writers through it recently.) And in researching this event I deeply enjoyed eggcorn's 2025 album "Observer Effect." I'm a sucker for a sad bop! Go check them out, along with Brian Mello and the Afterglow and New Earth Farmers. 〰️ 5pm 〰️ Ivy Room, Albany 〰️ $15 〰️ more info

Newton, and Bobby Seal. Moments is a scent-free space, so remember that when you're getting ready to head out to this one. 〰️ 😷 COVID SAFE: masks required 〰️ 6pm 〰️ Moments Co-Op, Oakland 〰️ $5-20 suggested donation, NOTAFLOF* 〰️ more info
  • Fright Night (1985) Screening 〰️ I feel like there are probably more "cult classic" vampire films than any other film topic, and this is one of them. When Fright Night, directed by Tom Holland (no, not Spiderman, this one) came out in 1985, Roger Ebert wrote that it was "not a distinguished movie, but it has a lot of fun being undistinguished," which is actually kind of an amazing blurb. Bring your own chair, and get there on time because they're starting with some cool shorts before the vampiric goings on commence. 〰️ 7pm 〰️ The Planetarium, Richmond 〰️ FREE, but donations welcome 〰️ more info

  • Native American and Indigenous Studies Lecture Series: Two-Spirit and Indigequeer Identities 〰️ Binary sex and gender is not only unscientific but also a colonial construct — one that we can all stand to chip away at as dutifully as possible. At this talk, Dr. Roger Kuhn (Poarch Band of Creek Indians) leads a conversation "exploring Two-Spirit and Indigequeer identities, decolonizing sexuality, and the ways culture shapes our bodily experiences." 〰️ 1:30pm 〰️ San Jose State University 〰️ FREE 〰️ more info
  • The Promise and Pitfalls of Inclusive Design and Disability Technology feat. Jutta Treviranus and Liz Henry 〰️ I'm sure your list of reasons to hate AI is already longer than Jafar's, but here's another line item for it: contributing to mechanized digital eugenics. In this talk, two experts will talk about disability, design, and the ways in which technology can both help and undermine disabled folks. Jutta Treviranus and Liz Henry will cover everything from collapsing down edge cases through statistical modeling to denying disabled people the right to repair their own devices. 〰️ 5-6:30pm 〰️ UC Berkeley 〰️ FREE 〰️ more info
  • Opening Reception: How Soon Is Now? 〰️ The California College of the Arts may simply be the skin that Vanderbilt is now wearing (this is my mental image) but they are apparently still having arts events! This show brings together recent work with archival material from the history of the college, including "models, drawings, project images, publications, posters, postcards, and other ephemera move between the present and fragments from the programs’ histories, revealing connections among students, faculty, alumni, ideas, and work across time." 〰️ 6-8pm 〰️ Center for Architecture + Design, SF 〰️ FREE, but RSVP required 〰️ more info

It might be a fundraiser for kids, but this event is 21+. 〰️ 6pm 〰️ Southern Pacific Brewing, SF 〰️ $40+ 〰️ more info
  • The Ring film with live orchestra 〰️ I've never seen The Ring but one time someone described the plot to me and I did not sleep for a week. I will not be attending this! But if you're a horror movie lover this is a real treat — the landmark horror film on the big screen accompanied by the SF Symphony playing Hans Zimmer’s score. Be sure to wear your "The Japanese version was scarier" t-shirt if you want to find my annoying ex in the crowd. 〰️ 7:30pm 〰️ Davies Symphony Hall, SF 〰️ $99-209 〰️ more info

  • Salt Lakes: An Unnatural History 〰️ Any book of hybrid research memoir that "draws on her training in geographic methods and on additional creative sources such as Mormon diaries, Soviet realist novels, Australian Aboriginal paintings, and techniques of memoir and the personal essay" is one I'm interested in. This one happens to be about salt lakes — weird, extraordinary ecosystems that are drying up around the world, as documented in Caroline Tracey’s book Salt Lakes: An Unnatural History. 〰️ 3:30-5pm 〰️ UC Berkeley, Berkeley 〰️ FREE 〰️ more info
  • Haunted Oakland 〰️ Is a city even real if it doesn't have ghosts? I argue: no. And by that metric, Oakland is a city. Join Beth Winegarner and Courtney Minick, hosts of the podcast Dead Reckoning, as they take you on a tour of Oakland's most notable undead residents. Perhaps we can get them to take their haunts southwest and scare some ethics into the techies? Just a thought! 〰️ 7-9pm 〰️ Clio's Books, Oakland 〰️ $10 〰️ more info
  • Living with the Stars on Day of the Dead 〰️ Everybody has lots to say about the equinox ("Madness designates the equinox between the vanity of night's hallucinations and the non-being of light's judgments," says Michel Foucault) but what about the "cross-quarter days" — those forgotten halfway points between them? Let us divide the darkness further together and learn about how these halfway points have coincided with the season of corn harvest and the traditions of Day of the Dead. Plus, there will be snacks. 〰️ 7pm 〰️ Randall Museum, SF 〰️ FREE 〰️ more info
  • Shab • شب featuring ALCHEMIA, Ari B, and BAQVAS 〰️ Out: dark academia. In: dark electronic music woven into South Asian, Southwest Asian, and North African heritage. Think the usual EDM, acid, darkwave, post-punk, and club tracks layered in with traditional instrumentation "and cultural sonic oddities." 〰️ 8pm 〰️ Moonglow, Oakland 〰️ FREE 〰️ more info
  • Bitch, Get Up and Drag Your Ass to El Rio’s Mini Movie Theatre 〰️ For the filmmakers and film curious, for the ADHD girlies, for those who style themselves as supporters of the arts, it's all here at this "micro-theatre style showcase" of short films made by local filmmakers Yoko Tamada, Madison Mendes, Sydney Rincón, and Paola Zavala.
