A few months ago, a reader reached out to ask us if there'd be any way we could consider posting a paid obituary about her recently deceased dog on our site. We were incredibly touched by this ask โ to be trusted to carry the memory of this person's beloved pet, as a fairly young website. The team agreed that we'd happily run it, but struggled to figure out what container would make the most sense for this.
From COYOTEโs beginning, we wanted to make our brand of journalism more participatory and reflective of the way people live in the Bay Area. Many people consider pets to be cherished members of their families. So why not make a whole page of our site dedicated to pet obituaries?
One night, while revisiting memories of customizing their Xanga back in the 2000s, Soleil whipped up this nostalgic, sweet, and more than a little earnest website for us.
While our team discussed pet obituaries, we realized we were bursting with ideas for stories about the experience of pet parenthood: how difficult it is to grieve when they're gone, how online pet supply store Chewy can so easily take over your life, how eager we are to hear from others about their pets (open thread post coming Friday!). Stay tuned for these stories and more.
So here we are at the dawn of a new themed week. Long live our beloved pals ๐
