Welcome to the COYOTE Calendar. Here are this week's handpicked events, just for you.

In the immortal words of Rob Thomas: man, it's a hot one. Stay hydrated and cool, friends. Here are some tips if you don't have AC. Or, get this dream job working and living in the Point Reyes Residential Lighthouse and you won't need AC.

This weekend there are some last-gasp-of-summer festivals and parties, including Petaluma River Craft Beer Fest (exactly what it sounds like), Tiny Fest ("dance with fairies and oracles"), and Best Buck in the Bay Rodeo & Festival (gay rodeo). There are still a handful of tickets to the Chautauqua Revue up in Occidental, and Thursday kicks off Bay Area Theatre Week, which spans 35 different theaters from Sonoma to Saratoga. If you're more interested in the sets than you are in the actors, Thursday also marks the beginning of the 23rd Annual Architecture + City Festival which runs through the end of the month. Later in the week, the Berkeley Old-Time Music Convention kicks off, as does Unity Fest.

School is back in session and I may have gone a tiny bit overboard with academic talks this week, but I just couldn't decide what to cut! Some weeks are for brain growing, some weeks are for booty throwing. I don't make the rules! I just report what I find.

• Navigating the Seasons: Unraveling the Genomic Basis of Hibernation in Brown Bears 〰️ When brown bears go to sleep for the winter, they don't just take a long nap. Their bodies change, and in fact, as these researchers have documented, their gene expression changes. • Edible Insects and the Future of Food: Capitalist Dreams, Loss, and Everyday Immigrant Practices 〰️ Remember when eating bugs was heralded as as the "food of the future?" (Our very own Soleil Ho definitely does). What ever happened to that? • Co-Motion: Re-Thinking Power, Subjects and Feminist and Queer Alliances book talk 〰️ If you're horny for queer political theory, boy is this for you! Paola Bacchetta, Professor and the Chair of the Department of Gender and Women’s Studies, digs into her new book and talks about the ways in which "feminist and queer coalitions take shape across differences and how collective movements can transform prevailing ideas about power, identity, and political agency." • Visiting Artist Lecture: Kainoa Gruspe 〰️ Or maybe you like your educational talks more of the visual art variety? Don't worry, Berkeley has that too! Kainoa Gruspe (whose bio includes the fact that he has "successfully gone two years without ordering anything from Amazon and everything is still okay") makes really gorgeous and interesting mixed media pieces that combine materials like fossilized squid, teak, cement and embroidery to engage with ideas around "lures: methods of attraction, visual trickery of another thinking being, hypnosis, craftsmanship in order to trap, standing out and blending in." • Punk and Archiving author talk 〰️ I devoured We're Having Much More Fun by Tom McEnaney and Judith Peraino, a book about how punks have not only built their own collectives and communities, but how they've also archived those worlds (seriously, check it out, it's so cool). At this event McEnaney and Peraino are joined by Anna Brown, author of Hail Murray! a beautiful book of Bay Area punk photos by Murray Bowles. • Art Against Brutality 〰️ Even in the most brutal, devastating conditions, humans make art. This new book by Claudia Bernardi — an artist in her own right — looks at art projects that emerged in El Salvador, Guatemala, Colombia, Argentina, México, and the United States amidst repression, violence, and terror. • The Boxes We Put Nature In: Rethinking How We Study the World 〰️ In order to understand the world around us, we make categories. It's one of the main projects of science, really, is sorting stuff into this box or that (plant or animal, land or water, ocean or seafloor). • NEGATIVLAND LIVE AT INTERNET ARCHIVE 〰️ In 1991, the sound collage collective Negativland put out an EP called U2, the title track of which was a bizarro kazoo filled parody that mashed up 'I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For' with legendary DJ Casey Kasem going off the rails (you can listen here). It will shock you to learn that U2 (the band who forced every Apple user to download their album) was not pleased and sued the tiny punk collective for $100,000, citing copyright infringement.
