The May Day edition.

Welcome to the COYOTE Calendar. Here are this week's hand-picked events, just for you. This Friday is International Workers' Day aka May Day and this calendar is dedicated to the walkouts, opt-outs, and other actions that you can partake in to show solidarity for workers and the labor movement. I've included all the May Day events I could track down in the Bay Area, but if you know of some I missed, please put them in the comments! Solidarity forever.

(Fun fact: the United States does not technically recognize International Workers' Day, which is almost too on the nose. For more on the history of this day, check out The Incomplete, True, Authentic, and Wonderful History of May Day.)

On top of May Day, this weekend we've got SF Rubber Weekend, the Museum of Forgotten Fun's newest exhibit, Silicon Valley Open Studios, the Tri-Valley Artist Studio Tour, and the Santa Rosa Zine Fest. The SF International Film Festival continues as well (check out our COYOTE picks here), and if you love murder mysteries and dinner theater wow do I have a special treat for you. Plus, for the banjo sickos, the Freight's 10th Anniversary Bluegrass Festival.

This week we've also got Star Wars, saws, Sailor Moon, and several ways to swap. We'll post new events each Wednesday. Go forth and enjoy!

  • May The 4th Be With You 〰️ When I was in college I watched Star Wars episodes 1–6 in one, extremely long stretch. I don't recommend this. • Queering the SF Budget: Activist Teach-in 〰️ Budgets are only boring if you let them be! (Pretty much every other COYOTE co-owner is rolling their eyes at me.) • Safety & Solidarity Forum 〰️ “We keep each other safe” isn't just a slogan — it's something we can actually do. But it requires getting plugged in and informed about exactly how to do that. An Outdoor Open Mic 〰️ Bring your latest writing, song, or other groovy thing you might want to do for no more than six minutes into a microphone in a park. 〰️ 7pm 〰️ Cedar Rose Park, Berkeley 〰️ 😷 COVID SAFE: KN95/N95+ masks required and provided, including for performers. 〰️ FREE 〰️ more info

  • The Chalice: Is It Worth It? The Costs of “Mainstreaming” Psychedelics with Ismail Lourido Ali 〰️ For many subcultures, there comes a moment where the mainstream begins to pay attention, appreciate, and even adopt and accept what the freaks at the margin were doing. And each time that happens, those who've been playing in that sandbox have to grapple with the pros and cons of increased scrutiny and acceptance. Psychedelics are no different. 〰️ 7–9pm 〰️ The Alembic, Berkeley 〰️ $10+ 〰️ more info
