COYOTE Calendar: April 9-April 15

This week we’ve got linocut hangouts, a pro wrestling themed market, animal tracking classes, and a surprising number of sheep.

Bold hand drawn words like "poetry" "sports" and "comics" surround a coyote reading a book, against a teal background.

Welcome to the COYOTE Calendar. Here are this week's hand-picked events, just for you.

It's feeling hella springy and there's a ton going on this weekend across the Bay Area, including the Sebastopol Documentary Film Festival; San Jose Day (which is actually nearly a week's worth of events celebrating the city), which is not to be confused with San Jose Made which is also happening; Whalefest in Monterey; the Northern California Cherry Blossom Festival in SF; and Beast Crawl Literary Festival in Oakland. (Two of those events I just mentioned have tattoo pop-ups associated. I'll let you guess which ones.) If you're itching to get out there and draw, there's a two-day educational nature walk and field sketch workshop you can sign up for. We're also starting to approach the only holiday that isn't fake (4/20) and there are already some ways to blaze.

Loads of stuff I wanted to tell you about in this calendar sold out before we could include it (including a commemorative screening of The Wild Parrots of Telegraph Hill to celebrate Mark Bittner's life, and a regalia making workshop) but we still have plenty of goodies for you this week anyway including linocut hangouts, a pro wrestling-themed market, animal tracking classes, and a surprising number of sheep. We'll post new events each Wednesday. Go forth and enjoy!

  • Learn To Read Animal Tracks and Signs 〰️ One of the best things about the natural world is that it immediately rewards attention — looking, listening, slowing down, and really sensing the world around you. This is a great class for beginning trackers, and all levels are welcome. 〰️ 9am-12:30pm 〰️ Willow Creek, Duncans Mills 〰️ FREE (registration required) 〰️ more info

  • Pints & Plants: Brews in Bloom 〰️ Bring a date, or just bring your friends, and learn how to pot and take care of a plant. Plus there's beer. Don't mix them: Plants don't like that. One of the best times of the year, in my opinion, and one of the best places to see a huge variety of blooms is the the Van Hoosear Wildflower Preserve — a 163-acre field on the lower slopes of Sonoma Mountain. I know it's a problem, but we've got so many. How bad is it actually for me to be 17% plastic? How much plastic actually is there out in the environment and how much of this is health nut fear-mongering? Fortunately (or unfortunately), ecologist Matthew Savoca has some of the answers after processing more than 15,000 liters of water and 1,500 liters of sand.
